Statistically speaking 1 in 6 Americans are victims of sexual assault. Everyone can do something to help decrease this number, for example, start a conversation. Sexual assault is not a typical or comfortable topic to discuss, but the more you talk about it the more likely you are to support someone in need. Allowing survivors to know they aren’t alone, and that there are free and confidential services out there for them is an enormous support. Cattaraugus Community Action Sexual Assault Program serves Allegany and Cattaraugus Counties. Toll Free Crisis Hotline 1.888.945.3970.
With April being sexual assault awareness month, there are community activities planned that you can be a part of with family and friends! National Wear Denim day is April 26, this was created to bring awareness to sexual assault and the reality that assaults can happen to anyone no matter what they are wearing. For this event, just wear denim, and acknowledge why you are doing so.
Alfred University is hosting a 5K Color run with the proceeds going to the local sexual assault program, on April 29 at the Bandstand with a cost of $5 for students (k-College) and $15 for community members. To register follow the link provided https://commerce.cashnet.com/AUPAY?CNAME=WILD.
