The Impaired Driver Program (IDP) at the Allegany Council on Alcoholism and Substance Abuse, Inc. (ACASA) is operated under the auspices of the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV). This collaboration between ACASA and the DMV provides an intensive seven (7) week education program for motorists who have been convicted of alcohol or other related driving offenses. This program is voluntary, although a judge may convict and impose a conditional/rehabilitative model consisting of a minimum of sixteen (16) hours of classroom activity, in order to educate the driver on the effects and consequences of drinking and driving. Participants are granted a conditional driver’s license by the DMV to meet their basic transportation needs during the term of the program. Upon completion of the program, rehabilitation and treatment (if indicated) and any other restriction as determined by the DMV, full driving privileges may be returned.
ALL participants register for the Impaired Driver Program through the Department of Motor Vehicles.
